Cephalosporins: a review.

چکیده
Introduction Cephalosporins are beta-lactam antimicrobials that share mechanisms of action and a similar structure with penicillins (Figure). Penicillins and cephalosporins have the same four-member “core” beta-lactam ring, but cephalosporins have an additional atom in the side ring. Modified side chains on either ring alter antimicrobial activity, resistance to beta-lactamases, or pharmacokinetics. Penicillin-susceptible pathogens usually are cephalosporin-susceptible. Exceptions are Listeria and Pasteurella sp. Cephalosporins have activity against common gram-negative organisms such as Escherichia coli, nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (ntHi), and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), but all methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) and enterococci are cephalosporin-resistant. Because of minimal use or current unavailability, we will not discuss cephalothin, moxalactam, cefamandole, cefonicid, ceforanide, ceftizoxime, cefoperazone, cefpirome, cefmetazole, or cefotetan.

Pixel selection by successive projections algorithm method in multivariate image analysis for a QSAR study of antimicrobial activity for cephalosporins and design new cephalosporins
Thirty-one Cephalosporin compounds were modeled using the multivariate image analysis and applied to the quantitative structure activity relationship (MIA-QSAR) approach. The acid dissociation constants (pKa) of cephalosporins play a fundamental role in the mechanism of activity of cephalosporins. The antimicrobial activity of cephalosporins was related to their first pKa by different models. B...
متن کاملPharmacokinetics of cephalosporins in the neonate: a review
The aim of this work was to review the published data on the pharmacokinetics of cephalosporins in neonates to provide a critical analysis of the literature as a useful tool for physicians. The bibliographic search was performed for articles published up to December 3, 2010, using PubMed. In addition, the book Neofax: A Manual of Drugs Used in Neonatal Care by Young and Mangum was consulted. Th...
متن کاملThe use of cephalosporins in penicillin-allergic patients: a literature review.
BACKGROUND The practice of avoiding cephalosporin administration to penicillin-allergic patients persists despite the low rate of cross reactions between both groups of antibiotics. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this literature review is to evaluate the published evidence regarding the commonly held belief that patients with a history of an allergic reaction to penicillin have a significantly incr...
متن کاملDrug utilization evaluation of third generation cephalosporins using core drug use indicators.
To evaluate the drug utilization of third generation cephalosporins using core drug use indicators in various wards of Sri Ramachandra Hospital. Third generation cephalosporins are the most commonly prescribed broad spectrum antibiotic even before the culture sensitivity results arrives. Hence this study was undertaken to study the drug utilization evaluation of third generation cephalosporins ...
